Cloud Storage Infrastructure

Cloud storage infrastructure is basically a conglomeration of the plethora of resources required to provide cloud storage service. Cloud storage services are advantageous for data storage and data retrieval. A cloud storage infrastructure consists of software, different tools, and hardware components. The different components are - servers, storage devices, virtualization software, and operating system etc.

Cloud Storage Infrastructure vs. Traditional Data Storage Infrastructure

There are several differences between the two storage infrastructures. In the cloud environment, users have remote access to their using web API services. They can work on their files stored on the cloud from around the globe via an Internet-enabled device. Cloud storage is actually built on object-based storage platforms.

In a cloud environment, the service providers take the onus to install equipment. They own and maintain the equipment required. This model of storage is known as Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), and payment is made on the basis of pay-as-you-go.

On the other hand, traditional data storage infrastructure is the combination of resources that includes- hard disk/ servers, RAM and CPU, and are typically housed in organization’s premise. This model of storage is more prone to risks caused by natural calamities.

Storage Categories

Cloud storage can be categorized into two parts:

Ephemeral Storage: This type of cloud storage is required during the running of the virtual machine, and the storage memory is brought to the pool once the virtual machine is shut down.

Persistent Storage: Persistent storage is required across the virtual machine reboots, and the memory is retained even if the machine is shut down.

Cloud Storage Infrastructure Requirements:

Manageability: The skill to manage the storage system with limited resources.

Performance: Measured by parameters like bandwidth and latency, it is the system performance.

Access Method: A protocol stack by which cloud storage can be shown.

Multi-tenancy: It is a characteristic of the system that supports a number of users simultaneously.

Scalability: The ability to accommodate ever-changing storage needs.

Storage Efficiency: Measure of how smoothly storage facility can be used.

Data Availability: Measure of up-time of the system

Control: The ability to control the system for parameters like - performance, cost, and other characteristics.

Cost: It is the measure of the cost of storage.
