There are two types of operating systems on which you may host your websites. They are Unix and Windows. ComputeHost offers you hosting plans in both the operating systems. Both have their own unique features and capable of handling high traffic websites. One point you have to remember is the operating system that you use on your computer will not make a difference to the platform you choose for your website. The major differences between the two are listed below.

Price: Unix is free and open source while Windows is a Microsoft owned commercially sold product. This means that if you are looking for a Windows product you have to pay a license fee. This makes Windows hosting more expensive than Unix plans.

Software: Unix-based servers are more compatible with PHP, Perl, Python scripting language, and MySQL database. Windows, on the other hand, is compatible with most of the tools. In addition to MSSQL, MSAccess, ASP.NET, VBScript etc, it also works well with all Unix applications. Unix does not support the Microsoft applications of.NET or VB development.

Stability: Unix systems are more stable than Windows and have better capabilities of handling high traffic. Unix also does not require frequent reboots. Windows require reboots each time there is an update. Unix servers are superior to Windows in performance.

Moving data or application will require you to determine few things, like – the physical location, virtualization, volume of data, and upload speed of your current environment, along with few others.

Identifying these things you can plan required migration very efficiently. If the volume of the data to be transferred is huge, it’s recommended to increase bandwidth. Depending on the compatibility of the disaster recovery software with the current environment, other tools may also require. For instance, if you want to move from a Hyper-V environment into a VMware Cloud with Veeam Disaster Recovery tools, you must use the VMware converter tool.
